Licensing Case Study

The problem:- A major Licensed premises was facing the threat of closure due to on going problems with the use and supply of illicit drugs within the venue, both by staff and patrons. A closure order would have place a significant financial threat to the business potentially losing takings of £40,000 per weekend

The Solution:- We implemented an immediate rescue package by liasing with the local licensing authority and police representatives who outlined their concerns. We conducted an assessment of the venue and identified a number of areas which left the venue vulnerable to closure including door supervisors who were engaged in the supply of controlled drugs. As a consequence a new firm of door supervisors were employed. Protocols were developed with the licensing authority to reduce the level of drug use and harm within the venue and target hardening strategies developed.

The Outcome:- The venue has now developed a working protocol with the police and local licensing authority to minimise the prevalence of drug use and supply within the venue. The threat of closure and loss of income has been removed and the venue has actually increased its turnover. Feedback received from patrons highlights a greater sense of security since the prevalence of drug use has decreased.
