Many organisations in the UK are now realising the benefits of integrating drug and alcohol testing into their policy. Properly implemented in consultation with relevant parties such as Trade Unions, drug and alcohol testing can provide an effective deterrent.
We do not recommend testing alone as the solution to drug and alcohol use. Testing will only prove beneficial when it is implemented in consultation with staff who are aware of the purpose and aims of such measures. By developing an effective Drug & Alcohol policy coupled with a programme of awareness training it is possible to highlight the benefits of testing, particularly in safety critical roles where impairment could result in serious accidents.
There are four main types of testing that we can implement:
Pre-employment: As part of a recruitment campaign employers are able to identify and minimise the risk of recruiting employees with an existing drug problem.
Random: Provides a deterrent effect by introducing workplace testing and promoting a drug and alcohol free work place.
Just Cause/Post-Incident: This provides a means of testing following an accident or near miss in the workplace to consider whether drugs or alcohol played a part.
Follow-Up: As part of an on-going assessment for employees returning to the workplace following a period of absence for drug or alcohol related problems.
Our screening tests are conducted by fully trained staff in a discreet and sensitive manner. We test using a variety of methods including urine, saliva and hair. Our testing equipment is highly accurate but where a positive test is produced that is disputed then our UKAS accredited laboratory will swiftly provide accurate confirmatory testing.
